Jamey Johnson at ACL Live

Jamey Johnson has the look of a grizzly heavy-rocker but with an unassuming and modest demeanor. In fact, he’s an award winning country music singer-songwriter from Alabama. He’s received praise from every side, receiving Grammy nominations, and winning “Song of the Year” in 2009 by both the ACM and the CMA. Yet he’ll say things like, “all I ever wanted was to get to just ride around and sing country music. It’s cool when things happen along the way, because those are things I never thought I could achieve. But whatever happens, I’ll just keep on doing what I do. I wake up every day and go play some more country music.”

He’s written songs for George Strait, James Otto, Trace Adkins and Jessie James and is currently accompanying Kid Rock on his Born Free Tour this year. Jamey made a music video directed by Matthew McConaughey for one of his newest songs Playing the Part. It features McConaughey dressed as a gorilla who’s being mocked and ridiculed by society. All kinds of monkey business ensues. It’s pretty deep. As the story goes, Jamey asks Matthew to direct his next music video, Matthew suggests “I’m thinking of a gorilla drinking red dog”. Both parties were immediately on board and wacky music video magic was born.

He’s a fan of the classic country tunes, which you might catch at one of his live shows. Jamey Johnson will be playing the Moody Theatre at ACL Live Thursday, May 12th. Click “I like it” on the event listing to enter for a chance to win one of five pairs of tickets to the show!
