Are the Wheeler Brothers going to be the next big thing to come out of the Live Music Capital of the World? Their career trajectory certainly seems to be heading in that direction. Consider the fact that the band has yet to release an album, but in the past year they have already been headlining shows in front of packed clubs in Austin. Also consider that Ray Benson, the legendary frontman of Asleep At The Wheel, invited the Wheeler Brothers to perform at his annual birthday party during SXSW, along with Carolyn Wonderland, The Trishas and Cody Canada.
Of Wheeler Brothers, Ray Benson says “I was blown away by the great vocals, cool songs and fantastic musicality of these guys! They rock, they roll, they’re city, they’re country, but most of all THEY ARE FUN!” Benson was so impressed by their unique brand of Americana-inspired indie rock that he signed the Wheeler Brothers to his own Bismeaux Records. The label is home to artists such as Asleep at the Wheel, Willie Nelson, Carolyn Wonderland, and Texas Tornados, so this young band of brothers has already found themselves in fine company.
Led by brothers Nolan (guitar, vocals), Tyler (bass) and Patick (drums), along with multi-instrumentalist A.J. Molyneaux and Danny Matthews, Wheeler Brothers have quickly emerged as one of Austin’s most exciting up-and-coming bands. The five-piece band combines the indie vibe of Austin with the twang of Texas folk. Each member has a unique and separate interest, ranging from classic rock, to alt. country, blues, New Orleans funk, roots reggae, and all things indie. This variety of backgrounds and diverse instrumentation creates a uniquely blended sound, tied together by a strong backbone of folk chord structuring, progressive indie melodies and Texas-style rock and roll.
Here is their first official record review, courtesy of No Depression, The Roots Music Authority:
“The Wheeler Brothers’ confidence is clearly a given, and Portraits provides proof that they’re ready to ascend into the big leagues on only a moment’s notice. Their songs undergo deft transitions in texture and tone, from a quiet lilt to an assertive stomp, but the changes in dynamic only add to the intrigue. Like other brother acts, Nolan, Tyler and Patrick Wheeler have an intrinsic bond that’s obviously instinctive, and with their knack for crafting exuberant melodies, this Austin-based outfit proves they can rock relentlessly without negating any subtler nuances.”
The Wheeler Brothers will celebrate the release of their debut album “Portraits” this Saturday at The Scoot Inn. $10 entry includes a special advance copy of the CD, which doesn’t hit stores until June. The band will be playing a bunch of new songs, with support from opening acts Sons Of Bill.com, Little Lo, and Austin Samba School. Advance tickets are available at wheelerbrothers.eventbrite.com, and we’re offering up two pairs on the Do512 event listing. We highly recommend you check it out!
