Every Monday we like to take a look at what some of our Do512 All-Stars have been up to. We think our All-Stars are pretty damn cool, and every time we check up on them we find something interesting and informative. We think you will too. Hence, here is the 10th installment of our weekly All-Star spotlight.
All-Star NO CONTROL Radio is always a great resource for heavy metal news and music in Austin. The show is broadcast every Friday night on 101X from 10pm to 1am, featuring three hours of the hardest hitting new and old metal music. You can listen live at www.101X.com and read what they have to say at nocontrolradio.blogspot.com. One of their recent updates referenced a possible Velvet Underground-Metallica combination:
“Legendary rocker Lou Reed and Metallica appear to be making some kind of album together. Kirk Hammett in an interview a few months back hinted that there was going to be a project that wasn’t totally a Metallica record and now we know what that project is shaping up to be, well at least in the personnel department.”
A few months ago our own Kirk Hammett hinted at a new Metallica project that’s “not really 100 percent a Metallica record.” While Kirk may have jumped the gun a little (and has since been properly punished with a series of push-ups!), we are more than proud to announce that we have just completed recording a full length album that is a collaboration with none other than the legendary Lou Reed.
Ever since we had the pleasure of performing with Lou at the 25th Anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden in October of 2009, we have been kicking around the idea of making a record together. Some of you astute Bay Area residents may have picked up news of recent Lou Reed sightings in the greater San Francisco area and we have indeed been working at our home studio at HQ on and off over the last few months.
A true innovator and easily one of the most influential songwriters, musicians, and performers in rock music history, Lou’s work with the Velvet Underground and as a solo artist has such an enduring quality that he has long been revered and respected by us and many of our peers.
“The Metallica crew played with the legendary singer at the 25th anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame show back in 2009, which seemed a little insane then, and now we will simply have to wait and see how this project turns out. We have all heard what happens when they experiment with their sound, but I think Lou Reed is one hell of a songwriter so it promises to be interesing. Watch the performance from RRHOF below.”

All-Star Pushermania creates and promotes events, and tells us about all sorts of happenings via his blog at austinsurreal.blogspot.com. One of his recent entries featured a brand new music video from Phranchyze, one of Austin’s best hip-hop talents.
The Pusher man also gave up some details on the Grand Re-Opening weekend of The ND, which will resurface in late July with several new features and amenities for the Austin scene.

All-Star uLOVEi has become a fixture in Austin’s party scene. Sometimes that means serving as a DJ for the night, and many times it means serving as a party photographer. He keeps a constantly updated photo roll of his party pics at ulovei.com. One of his latest set of captures was at Knuckle Rumblers’s “Smash Dat A$$ Up” event at Beauty Bar. See the full set here

All-Star Ian Morales stays on top of the Austin music scene via the local publications Austin Vida and Red River Noise, and also through his personal blog at ianlovesmusic.blogspot.com. Two of the most recent things to pique his interest were a rare on-stage appearance from the legendary Mike Ness of Social Distortion, and a performance by the hard-rocking Austin band And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead on Lopez Tonight.
“This was a rare moment captured on video and I just had to post it for all to see. Punk Rock’s Godfather, Mike Ness of Social Distortion, joined Sharks onstage in Virginia recently to perform with them. Why is this a big deal you ask? Mike Ness hasn’t performed with anyone for twelve years. The last person was Bruce Springsteen. That is a hell of an endorsement for Sharks. Sharks is one of the bands I am looking forward to checking out at this year’s Warped Tour. The English punk band is a serious up-and-comer in the U.S. punk rock scene and if you don’t know them now, you will soon. I’ll make sure of it.”
“…And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead rocked on Lopez Tonight last night. I just want them to hurry up and play another Austin show already. This clip also reminded me that it is time to add them to my vinyl collection.”
