“Sports bar” is a deceiving term for The Upper Decks, a new restaurant that opened up on 301 Barton Springs Rd. Undoubtedly, it’s a great place to watch a game, with its massive array of TVs broadcasting every sporting event imaginable. But simplifying the viewing experience to just the realm of sports undersells the expansive vistas of the Austin cityscape diners can gaze at while munching on tasty fare. Calling The Upper Decks simply a bar is another oversimplification. Patrons in the mood to imbibe will be pleased by the weekday happy hours, daily drink specials, or pub trivia on Mondays hosted by Geeks Who Drink. Yet few bars offer the food selection available for hungry customers of The Upper Decks.
The Upper Decks menu includes all of the traditional bar standbys, but adds a little something extra to make them memorable. Portabella mushrooms nestle in quesadillas, cedar planked salmon rests atop salads, and house-cured bacon graces everything from the Cobb salad to the B.A.T. (bacon, arugula, and tomato pesto sandwich). For those looking for more substantial entrees, The Upper Decks offers molasses pork chops, grilled rainbow trout, and St. Louis style ribs. Several menu items offer foodie shout outs to the Austin area, whether it’s mussels battered in locally brewed Fireman’s 4 or the previously mentioned B.A.T. sandwich, named after the nearby South Congress bridge denizens. Complete the meal by sipping on one of The Upper Decks’ 8 draught beers, 20 distinct bottled and craft beers, or wide selection of wines and spirits, all while watching the sun dip below the Austin skyline.
If all of this isn’t enough for you to give The Upper Decks a try, Sundays feature movie night. At sunset, the third deck of the restaurant is transformed into an outdoors theater for customers to enjoy both the scenery and a scene from their favorite film. The owners also want to make sure nobody has to give up a night out to leave Spot at home. Tuesdays are Doggie Happy Hour days, where diners can enjoy drink discounts while pallin’ around with their pooch. And if you still can’t find an event you like, The Upper Decks is a great place to host your own event, whether it’s your friend’s birthday or your son’s rehearsal dinner.
