Mayer Hawthorne. If you haven’t heard that name yet, it’s time for you to catch up with everyone else. Let me help get you up to speed: First of all, that’s not his real name, but his pornstar name (middle name + street you grew up on…try it, you’ll be surprised how slick it sounds, mine’s Jasper Ivey.) Secondly, he’s one of a handful of artists who are heading up what’s being called a “soul revival,” referring to new music that is reminiscent of 1960s soul. (Contemporaries include Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Fitz & The Tantrums, and the late, great Amy Winehouse.)
Hawthorne might refuse to be called a throwback artist however, and he has the right to do that because he’s taking everything a step further by incorporating fresh hip hop into his music. Makes sense, because after all, he’s a Detroit native which has both a rich hip hop scene and happens to be the birthplace of Motown.
He’s a DJ (moniker Haircut) and multi-instrumentalist who laid down a couple of tracks one day to make this song:
Then he recorded an entire album of soul/hiphop influenced songs and now tours as Mayer Hawthorne and the County (his backing band.) I went to his ACL after show last year at Antone’s with Kings Go Forth and let me tell you, it was something else! I felt like I was watching a Smokey Robinson/Otis Redding soul revue, where no one in the audience could help but dance.
In addition to being a great musician and performer, Mayer Hawthorne has the undeniable ability to pull off some of the slickest outfits imaginable. He rocks the thick frames, and pairs them with these fly-vintage suits and skinny ties (with the occasional bowtie.) Then he finishes off the look with hip basketball shoes. (Take notes, fellas.)
MH will be stopping by the Scoot Inn on Saturday night to DJ and perform some of his music (he recently released an EP of covers, called Impressions EP, which you can download FO FREE.) Joining him will be Austin’s own Soul Track Mind and KP and the Boom Boom, and special guest Rye Rye, straight outta Charm City. Soul Track Mind was the resident band for soul night at TC’s and now they perform around Austin and put on a hell of a show. Haven’t seen KP and the Boom Boom yet, but I will Saturday and they look awesome!
