Before we get too deep into the All-Star action this week, we’d be remiss if we did not take a second to mention our Central Texas Wildfire Relief page. It lists more than 20 wildfire relief events and benefit concerts going on in the Austin area, all with a common goal of aiding those affected by the fires.
Now, on to the week that was and thoughts on the coming weekend, as viewed through the eyes of the Do512 All-Stars. This is the twentieth edition of our weekly where we check in on some of our favorite local media, bloggers, event experts, and professional going out-ers. We call them the Do512 All-Stars, and every time we check up on them we find something interesting and informative. So let’s get to it:
All-Star Austin Lifestyle Magazine chronicles the people, culture and the lifestyle of Austin. Every issue focuses on the best of everything Austin has to offer, from entertainment and cuisine to culture, fashion, and more. This magazine is about what is new and fresh in Austin. You can read their latest edition by clicking the image below, and check out more at their blog.
All-Star AustinVida is always there to inform us on the latest in Latin everything. From live music and artist interviews, to album and film reviews, to anything else Latino-centric in Austin, Austin Vida is keeping tabs on it. For instance, the award-winning São Paulo singer-songwriter Luísa Maita is coming to town on Friday, and they’ve got a preview of the show:
The sounds of Brazil will be taking over Flamingo Cantina this Friday, September 9 when singer-songwriter Luísa Maita performs. The award winning São Paulo native toured for the first time in the U.S. last year and garnered quite a buzz when NPR called her “The New Voice of Brazil.” Maita is also a 2011 Brazilian Music Award winner for “Best New Artist.” Take advantage of the rare opportunity to see Maita perform.
Co-headlining will be Suns of Orpheus (S.O.O.). Formed in Austin, Texas in the summer of 2011, S.O.O. is lead by the dynamic Frederico Geib, frontman of local Brazilian funk band Os Alquimistas and the more soulful F7 & The Hashashin. The S.O.O. is Geib’s self-labeled “pschedelic world music” band.
Additionally, they plan to crash the All My Friends Music Fest in Tijuana, Mexico
Looking at some of their recent picks on Do512, Austin Vida is also interested in two art installations. One is called Stacked Waters, by artist Teresita Fernandez, currently on display at the Blanton Museum of Art. The other is titled YLA 16: Thought Cloud, which shows the work of 10 different Texas artists, currently on display at the Mexic-Arte Museum.
All-Star Austin Social Planner is a digital magazine and interactive calendar website located at AustinSocialPlanner.com, which highlights some of the biggest and most talked about events around town. They are currently featuring a list of Wildfire Relief Events, and they also highlight the newest creation by Sullivan’s Steakhouse, Sully’s Side Bar, on the corner of 3rd and Colorado:
Sully’s prides itself on tacos, tequila and taps, two of which we tried earlier this week. Chef Carols Garcia brought out every taco on the menu, and the winner (at least with the Austin Social Planner crowd) was most definitely the brisket tacos. The drinks were a great combination of the expected (Margaritas), and the unexpected, which included a shot of Tequila with pomegranate juice and lime!
The real crowd pleaser on the menu, though, is the Smokey Guacamole. One bite and you immediately think, “I have never had guacamole this smooth and creamy.” The menu uncovered the special ingredient… smoked Gouda. Well, that Gouda filled guac was gone fast!
Here’s a look at a few of Austin Social Planner’s upcoming picks on Do512:
