It’s Friday! The day we welcome the weekend, and check in to see what some of our Do512 All-Stars are up to. These are some of our favorite local media, bloggers, event experts, and professional going out-ers, and every time we check up on them we find something interesting and informative. That’s what these weekly All-Star spotlights are all about. So let’s get to it:
All-Star Ultra8201 supports the Austin music scene by providing concert and festival coverage on his blog at ultra8201.blogspot.com, as well as by sponsoring, promoting and creating individual events throughout the year. Two of his most recent entries involve the Fun Fun Fun Fest aftershows and the latest BLEACH issue release party:
Fans will be excited to hear that the 6th annual Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, TX has just announced this year’s aftershow lineup, where shows will be free to all those with Fun Fun Fun Fest wristbands. Artists performing include Kool Keith, The Felice Brothers, The Thermals, Glass Candy, Dead Confederate, Ty Segall and more… plus appearances from select Fun Fun Fun artists.
FFF NITES were specifically curated to be an extension of the fest itself, and allow for the Fun Fun Fun experience to continue after the park closes. Shows are scheduled at classic Red River venues like the Mohawk, Beerland, Red 7, ND, Beauty Bar, Club De Ville, The Parish, and Empire Automotive. Fun Fun Fun Fest passes now stretch late into the night with the addition of FFF NITES. When asked about this announcement, FFF Founder Graham Williams said, “FFF Nites is a new concept that we are excited about. We wanted to not only host festival acts, but add new acts, make it affordable, and change the way Austin looks at how festival aftershows can be done.”
It was bound to happen eventually, two of Austin’s most forward-thinking groups, Learning Secrets and Bleach, have finally come together for an epic evening celebrating BleachOnline.com’s “Wild Mint” issue release, as well as the appearance of some very special guests we can’t yet name!!! The multi-media space at 29th Street Ballroom will feature projections of photography from the new issue, tasting from Wanderlust Ice Cream, and live music from Austin’s Boys’ Life as well as DJ sets from Orthy + Jeramy of Learning Secrets, and L.A.’s new party kingpins, Poolside!

We LOVE the Alamo Drafthouse and we’re always keeping an eye on their events. What’s better than cold beer, hot movies, and delicious food under one roof. It’s one of the best theaters in the country, and the Alamo Drafthouse Blog is constantly updated with interesting content. Here’s what they have coming up:
If you missed THE DEAD during Fantastic Fest 2010, we are giving you a second chance to see the zombie movie like no other. After his plane crashes in the South African bush, Rob Freeman (SAVING PRIVATE RYAN) joins forces with Prince David Osei (a superstar actor in his native Ghana) to cross the vast desert by any means necessary. A daunting task under normal circumstances becomes particularly challenging after the zombie apocalypse.
Director Howard Ford will be in attendance for the Friday midnight screening of THE DEAD at the Village!
Purchase tickets here for screenings starting Friday, October 7th at the Alamo Village.
The opaque and solitary life of a small time pawnbroker is affected when a baby suddenly appears, basket and all, in his apartment. His rancid vanity is disrupted, his solitary bitterness menaced at the edge of a transformation, and as much as he investigates the child’s precedence at the brothel he frequents, tries unsuccessfully to rid himself of the baby, or avoids getting comfortable with his neighbor after hiring her to look after the child; a gray habit of loneliness and isolation begins to crack down. The remote possibility of another life peeks in, among ghosts from the past and a present oppressive and absurd. Miracles happen to those who wish for them… and see them through. (Eugenio, Cine Las Americas)
OCTUBRE is playing this Sunday, Oct 9, at the Village. Get tickets here.
All-Star AustinVida focuses on everything Latin. From live music and artist interviews, to album and film reviews, to anything else Latino-centric in Austin, Austin Vida keeps tabs on it. For instance, the award-winning São Paulo singer-songwriter Luísa Maita is coming to town on Friday, and they’ve got a preview of the show:
Giveaway: Brujeria at Emo’s concert tickets
All you have to do to be eligible to win is go to our Facebook page and click “Like” on the link for this post. We will give one pair of tickets away on Friday and another on Saturday, the day of the concert.
Brujeria, of course, is the legendary death metal super group started by Dino Cazares, founding member of Fear Factory. Since their inception in the late ’80s, Brujeria has included members of Faith No More, Down by Law and Napalm Death, to name a few. In Brujeria, the members all go by aliases and usually cover their faces to conceal their identities. Despite the secretiveness, Brujeria has a rabid fan base. This concert is sure to be crazy and memorable.
Austin Vida & Eye In The Sky showcase at The Parish

Indie-psych rockers Sour Soul are coming to us all the way from Mexico City. We first came across the band at Beauty Bar on a random Tuesday night in 2010 and have been following the band ever since. Sour Soul’s music is an epic blend of psychedelic, classic rock, soul and Brit-pop backed by Latin percussion. Learn more about Sour Soul in our Austin Vida video interview here.
